The antennae of wireless relay stations and the like are conventionally protected from direct lightning strikes by needle type lightning rods. The protection zone is specified by the angle method in IECA4201 (1992), and they are usually designed and fitted so that there is no risk of lightning strike within an angle of 60ºC (45ºC for hazardous materials, etc.).
However, as research advanced, it became clear that it would be difficult to protect equipment against lightning using the conventional angle method alone, and in 2003 the IEC standard was revised to incorporate the rotating sphere and mesh methods currently recommended by IEC standards, and calling for an appropriate angle method to be used in accordance with the height of the structure to be protected. The umbrella type Paracatch lightning rod is practically the same height as an ordinary lightning rod, and has been developed to apply the new IEC standards to the antennae of wireless relay stations, etc., and features a structure like an open umbrella, which very effectively captures lightning.
Furthermore, Paracatch uses polymer isolaters for insulation and, when combined with a lightning protection system, is very effective in trapping lightning current and dispersing it safely.
